Puppy Teeth, They Hurt!

The excitement of getting a puppy and raising it to adulthood. Sounds like fun, and exciting to add a new member to the family, but watch out because puppy teeth hurt. What do you do? You get a new puppy and the puppy wants to bite your hands your feet and your clothes and puppy teeth are like sharp needles.

If you just got a puppy and you want them to stop, some people’s first reaction is to hit the dog’s mouth and yell, “No!” but that is not such a great idea, because usually the dog will bite back because or it makes the dog fearful for the moment, but returns to the behavior because they are going to get the attention it is looking for. A good way to start training the puppy to stop biting is to remove what you don’t want it to bite and replace it with something that it can bite.

If the puppy is chasing your clothing and biting them, then away to teach the puppy to stop biting your clothing while you are walking is by stopping, staying calm and as the puppy lets go and stops pulling you say, “good doggy”. Then resume your walk, but most likely she will attack your pants or feet again as you walk, so you will have to stop, relax. The puppy will eventually release and learn that you are not going to play this way. Again, if you give her something to chew on that you want her to, you will be teaching her in a better way, because she learns that she is not going to get the attention she wants.
